C.Bhaskaran, first SFI president, dead

CHENNAI: C. Bhaskaran, first all-India president of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and editor of the Chintha Publishers of the CPI(M) in Kerala, died here on Saturday. He was 65 and is survived by his wife Thulasi Bhaskaran, former news editor, Deshabhimani, and sons Dinesh and Manesh.

Major Dinesh said his father, who was suffering from renal failure, came to Chennai for consulting doctors on a possible transplant. He was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals, but died of multi-organ failure.

Born at Vengad in Kannur district, Mr. Bhaskaran became a political activist at an early age and played a key role in the formation of the SFI, becoming its president in 1970. He remained in the post till 1974. He later devoted his energies to the cultural wing of the party, became a member of the editorial board of Chintha, ideological organ of the Kerala CPI(M), and editor of the Chintha Publishers.
Major contributions
Mr. Bhaskaran's major contributions include several tracts on student political activism, hundreds of articles on socio-political issues in various publications, a compilation of articles on the late A.K. Gopalan, titled AKGyude Sanchaarapadhangal, and a major volume tracing the life stories of the founder leaders of the Communist movement in the country, Communist Prasthaanathinte Aadya Padhikar.
He was working on a memoir when his health took a turn for the worse.
