Com.J S Tank was appointed in Railways on 25.11.1957 as Fireman II in Bareilly depot of Izatnagar division of North Eastern Railway. He was later promoted as Fireman I / Diesel Assistant in 1977.
In 1972, new committees of AILRSA were formed throughout the North Eastern Railway and he held various posts from Branch Secretary to the Zonal President. He took over charge as our Central Treasurer in the BGM held at Vishakapatnam in 1997 and discharged his duties efficiently till 2020 and after that he was a Permanent Invitee of the AILRSA Central Committee.
He had participated in the strike programs of AILRSA in 1973, 1974 & 1981. For participating in the 1973 strike he was removed from service but was re-instated immediately after the success of the strike.
For participating in the 1974 strike, he was removed from service and after one year, re-instated as Fireman I.
During the 1981 strike, he was one among the 14 comrades who were removed from service and after a long hard fought struggle of 14 years by AILRSA, the orders for taking back the victimized employees was given in 1995 but as per his age, he retired in 1992 as Diesel Assistant. He lastly worked as Diesel Assistant in KASGAN depot of Izatnagar division of N E Railway. During the entire 14 years period of unemployment, he and others were financially supported by the AILRSA.
He was married in 1952 and has 2 sons and 3 daughters. During the communal riots of 1984, one of his son went missing and is still untraceable. Due to this tragic incident his wife was shocked very much and after gradual deterioration of her health, she passed away in 1990.
Apart from the trade union work in which he was fully engaged, his favourite past time and hobby waa photography. He owned a hi-tech camera with all the necessary zooming accessories and whenever time permitted, he indulged in his hobby.
He is survived by 13 grand children and 4 great grand children.
The members of AILRSA throughout the country paid a rich tribute to this great and sincere leader of the working class, in general, and the Loco running staff, in particular.
