KT Mohammed

Shri. K.T. Mohammed-29.09.1927-25.03.2008

Renowned Malayalam Drama & Film Play Writer, Director Shri K T Mohammed  (a symbol of unadulterated humanism) 6th Death Anniversary on 25.03.2008.

K.T began his literary career as a short story writer; the story titled Kannukal (The Eyes) won for him the first prize in the International Short Story Competition. Later the story had been translated into different Indian & foreign languages.

K.T was a social reformist who was questioning the superstitions prevailing in the Muslim community throughout in his most famous play ‘ITHU BHOOMIYANU (This is Earth)’.

KT wrote the play, which was his first performance in 1953 when he was only 23 years old. Particularly this play attracted strong protests wherever the DRAMA was staged.

It was a very popular and staged in different cities even outside the Kerala State. This drama continues to be performed even today shows the play has lost little of its relevance.

KT wrote himself lot of plays as ‘SRISHTTI (The Creation),’ ‘STHITHI (The Situation),’ ‘SAMHARAM,’ ‘SAKHSALKARAM, ‘SANATHANAM, ‘SAMANWAYAM, ‘KAFAR, ‘DEEPASTHAMBHAM MAHASCHARYAM, ‘CHUVANNA GADIKARAM,’ ‘KADALPPALAM, ‘SOOTHRADARAN’ as one of the leading playwrights in his life.

KT wrote novels, screenplays, including ‘KANDAM BECHA KOTTU (The Patched up Coat),’ ‘KADALPPALAM,’ and ‘THURAKKATHA VATHIL,’ and songs. He was also a good actor and film director.

K.T had no formal education and was after all just an employee in the Postal Service. Since he was the president of the union of the Postal Department at Kozhikode, he believed he had no right to continue in the job when his colleagues, most of them were working on temporary basis, were dismissed from service. He went on medical leave and informed his superior officers that he would return for the work only if each one of the sacked employees were taken back. It didn’t happen and didn’t renew his medical leave and allowed himself to be dismissed.

Kerala Government honored and nominated him as CHAIRMAN of the Kerala Film Development Corporation & Sangeetha Nadaka Academy. He had been elected DALA (Dubai Art Lovers Association) 2006 award for his outstanding contribution to the cultural field of Kerala.
